Hereford Cathedral - September, 2005

Hereford has a chained library. Since my first visit in 1959, it has been moved to a beautiful new, climate-controlled building. The cathedral also houses the magnificent Mappa Mundi of 1290. To our eyes the placement of the countries on this map seems fanciful, but, in fact, the amazing thing is how much the creator knew about the world. He shows the Caspian sea and the Spice Road as well as much of Africa and the Middle East.
